What You’ll Need

Homemade caramelized onions add loads of natural sweetness to balance out the feta’s tang. Scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of the post for exact ingredient amounts.

For the Patties

  • Ground lamb Use fresh or frozen (thawed).
  • Salt and pepper I prefer kosher salt and freshly-cracked black pepper.
  • Whole-wheat slider buns Feel free to use regular ones.
  • Balsamic Caramelized Onions Try my recipe or prepare your own.
  • Cucumbers – They can be peeled or unpeeled.

For the Whipped Feta

  • Garlic – Fresh garlic and garlic paste are best.
  • Feta cheese Avoid herbed feta to prevent the whipped mixture from being too overpowering.
  • Cream cheese Full-fat cream cheese is richer and creamier, but you can use low-fat instead.
  • Rosemary Use fresh or dried.
  • Thyme Dried dill works too.

How To Make Grilled Lamb Burgers

Freshly-grilled patties are juiciest but you can also make them in advance. Scroll to the bottom of the post for the full recipe card.

  • Make the whipped feta. Process all of the whipped feta ingredients in the food processor until smooth. Scrape the sides and mix well. Set it aside.
  • Form the patties. Use your hands to shape the ground beef into 6 patties for the burgers. Season with salt and pepper on both sides.
  • Grill them. Set the grill to medium-high heat. Grill them for 3-4 minutes per side and then remove them from the heat. Add the buns and toast them for 1 minute. Set them aside.
  • Assemble the burgers. Spread each bun with 1-2 tablespoons whipped feta. Place a cooked patty over half of the buns. Top them with cucumbers, caramelized onion, and the remaining buns. Serve and enjoy!

Tips & Variations

These Mediterranean-style lamb burgers with sweet caramelized onions can be spread with creamy aioli or served in sourdough bread.

  • Change the spread. Swap the whipped feta for Roasted Garlic Aioli, Basil Pesto Sauce, or chipotle mayo for more flavor.
  • Swap the bread. Sliced sourdough, ciabattas, or focaccia are great swaps for the slider buns in this recipe.
  • More toppings. Add sliced tomatoes, chopped roasted peppers, arugula, baby spinach, or sauteed mushrooms for a heartier bite.
  • Change the protein. Use ground chicken, turkey, pork, or beef instead of lamb for easy variations.
  • Prep ahead. Grill the patties and make the whipped feta in advance so you only have to reheat the patties and assemble the burgers throughout the week.

Serving Suggestions

These grilled lamb burgers are an easy cookout dinner. Serve them with Sweet Potato Fries, Garlic Parmesan Fries, or Zucchini Fries. My Corn on the Cob is another great option. For salad sides, try my Simple Arugula Salad or Mediterranean Salad.

How To Store & Reheat Leftovers

Don’t store assembled burgers to prevent the bread from softening.

  • Fridge: Store the whipped feta and patties in separate containers. The feta will keep for up to 3 days and the patties for up to 5.
  • Freezer: Wrap each cooked patty in plastic wrap. Transfer it to a freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge.
  • To reheat them: Sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon water and microwave in 20-second increments. You can also heat it in a skillet over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes per side.
